Schon wähnt man neben den Wetterbedingungen auch die Beziehungskonstellation des früheren Films „reanimiert“, denn auch die selbstbewusste und ein paar Jahre ältere Natsumi könnte leicht ein Herz entflammen. Wäre da nicht das Teenagermädchen Hina, das Hodaka aus dem dubiosen Club rettet, wo es arbeitet. Die etherische Hina bedankt sich mit der Demonstration ihrer besonderen Gabe: Als Nachfahrin einer legendären „Wetterjungfrau“ kann sie durch Geisteskraft das Wetter ändern. Im verregneten Tokio gibt es für ihre erfolgreichen Sonnenbeschwörungen reichlich Bedarf, was beide Teenager zu einer florierenden Dienstleistung entwickeln. Auch die Wirkungsmacht des Regens demonstrierte der Großmeister des Anime unübertrefflich in „Totoro“. Und doch hat Makoto Shinkai seinen ganz eigenen Stil, den er von Film zu Film weiter vertieft. Seine Figuren mögen den Elementen trotzen, den Gefängnissen der Zeit oder sogar der eigenen Körperlichkeit entfliehen – aber sie tun dies in urbanen Kontexten. Schwer vorstellbar, dass eine Miyazaki-Hexe wie Hina ihre Dienste über ein soziales Netzwerk per Handy offerieren würde. Doch gerade diese Zeitgenossenschaft macht Shinkais Überwirklichkeit so kraftvoll. Und wohl kaum hat man in einem gezeichneten Großstadtdrama so betörende Naturschauspiele erlebt. The main character Hodaka doesn't have any good qualities, his only motivation being love; and the depiction of women is degrading. Here as eye-candy and for cheap jokes and sight-gags about their figures.
This could've been somewhat overlooked with a strong message, but the climate change theme is clumsy, and comes across as "Well we're doomed anyway, no point doing anything about it.
Add to that too much padding, a J-POP heavy soundtrack that isn't to my taste and an over-reliance on flashy CG, and it's not one I can recommend.
