Watch the Doors performing When The Music's Over While I understood the charm of Jim Morrison's snake-hipped crooning, for me the seductiveness of the Doors always lay in the keys: the way they twinkled beneath Riders on the Storm, the constant nag of them in the side of LA Woman, the near-spasm of them at the start of When the Music's Over. There was always something so physical and commanding about their presence. It seemed to me then that the pulse beneath these songs was always Manzarek's playing, that those keys somehow embodied all the storms and strangeness, the fire and love, the other side of these songs. It was the keys that made you feel as if you were always on the cusp of something: the strange outsider trying to set the night on fire, loving madly, riding that storm; it was the keys that made you feel you were occupying that teetering space on the edge of society, the brink of insanity, one step from wildness, from succumbing; that you were hovering somewhere between a threat and a thrill. And so to hear Manzarek play always summoned in me a similar feeling to all those other early adolescent adventures. It was the sound of car rides with boys and warm beer in bus stops. Released as a B-side in 1968, it was inspired by the road in Laurel Canyon where Morrison lived with his girlfriend, and where he would sit on their balcony watching the hippies walk by. I liked the sweet surface simplicity of it, the lolloping joy of a house and a garden and a girl and "la la la, la la la la. And then it was the keys that seemed to twist it, to provide an unexpected undercurrent that drew your attention to the robes and monkeys, the lazy diamond-studded flunkies. And so the picture shifted, from easy domesticity to something more psychedelic. And into that open-hearted, wide-world curiosity of "I would like to see what happens" my adolescent mind wandered. The Doors were born when Ray Manzarek met Jim Morrison on Venice Beach in 1965. Ray became the beating heart of The Doors and the architect of their intoxicating keyboard sound. The Dionysus/Jim Morrison comparisons are obvious ( and I even do rituals based on them) but it was always a bit more than that. My rock and roll world will never be the same. The Doors were Rays baby. He was the one who put up the money to keep the band together in their early years. He was the one who saw the rock star in Morrison and encouraged its growth. He brought in Kreiger (who in turn brought in Densmore) and it was at Ray and Dorothys (Rays wife since before the days of The Doors up until just today) house where the band first practiced. No Ray Manzarek no Doors, its as simple as that. Manzarek wasnt only the architect of the bands organ-heavy sound, he kept the flame burning when it looked like The Doors might end up relegated to the trash-bin of rock history. Its hard to believe today, but by the end of the 1970s The Doors were nearly the Hermans Hermits of American rock and roll. Much of the danger and brilliance had been forgotten with only the occasional single still spinning on radio. A well timed biography of Jim and the band ( No One Here Gets Out Alive by Danny Sugerman and Jerry Hopkins) helped to revive interest, but so did Manzareks thinly veiled references to Morrison possibly being alive. I can almost still here him saying “No one saw the body man! ” Manzarek never duplicated the success he had with The Doors, but it all wasnt a total failure. Manzareks Golden Scarab solo-album wont go down in history as one of rocks forgotten treasures, but it was just as adventurous as it was pretentious. Besides, lyrics to Egyptian gods and pharaohs is cool by me. Manzarek also later produced the seminal punk band X, wrote novels and oversaw much of the bands legacy. On June 20 2003 (appropriately near the Summer Solstice) I went down to Detroits DTE Energy Music Theatre where I got to see Manzarek (touring with Robby Krieger as the “Doors of the 21st Century”) for the first (and last time) in my life. It was a night of The Doors greatest hits with Ian Astbury of The Cult doing a fair impression of Jim Morrison. I could feel Manzareks joy from our cheap seats, it was obvious that the dude loved playing his music and celebrating the legacy he created back in the 1960s. Sure, there were some cornball moments from Manzarek during the show, but I always got the feeling that was just how he rolled. I never got to see The Doors (Morrison passed before I was even born) but I got to see Ray and Robby and it was pretty damn close.
