Wow, they must have filmed that last scene in a anti-gravity chamber to get those floating effects.
Wow. 52 mins of gripping commentary. well done! It's like the old days, when we would watch a documentary on telly for an hour. When nobody watches films over 15 mins anymore, you've got us all hooked for 52 mins.

Apollo 13 mission astronauts. Na Mesiaci nikdy nikto nebol. The space program is still haunted by Apollo-1 test accident on Jan 27, 1967. Man finally lands on the moon on July 20, 1969. Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks) is the experienced leader. Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) is the brash eager young gun. Both Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Ken Mattingly (Gary Sinise) are aiming to be on Lovell's crew. Lovell is slated to be on Apollo 14 but gets bumped up to 13. Mattingly gets sidelined for not having had the measles and backup Swigert is put in his place. They are sent up on April 11, 1970. Having already achieved the landing, the world isn't paying attention to this mission. That is until things go wrong. Ed Harris plays the Flight Director Gene Kranz and Kathleen Quinlan plays Marilyn Lovell.
This is a compelling story on its own. On the surface, this is the B-side of the epic man's mission to Mars. However director Ron Howard meticulously retains the details of the mission that makes it all come to life on the screen. That is the greatness of this movie. It is epic in all of its small details and its scope. All the actors are giving sincere performances in an old fashioned movie.

These guys were ice cold and calm in space... I'm sitting here on the edge of my seat decades later listening to recordings.  What a crew.  Thanks for creating this.  Awesome. Apollo 13 mission. Thank for posting. Still holds up pretty well after half a century, doesn't it? This was the turning point for all subsequent SF movies. It set the bar pretty high and it might be argued that the bar was SO high that CGI was invented so no film maker had to go through what Kubrick and his crew did to make this movie. If you want to read about the process, check out Space Odyssey by Michael Benson from your local library. The process was, in one word: hellish. It took four agonizing years from start to finish and a lot of people went WAY past the burnout stage; none more so than Kubrick himself. (Consider that he followed this with A Clockwork Orange which promptly won a X rating and forced Kubrick to withdraw it from the UK entirely. It was finally released there in 2000, thirty years later) The reviews were horrible when this was released. At the two major premieres, people actually walked out, even before the intermission. Critics slagged it unmercifully and Kubrick- as well as most of the cast and crew- thought that their careers were over, finished, kaput. (You'll never work in this town again! But the stoners and the college kids fell in love with it and SF fans were all over this like white on rice. Even as the critics were sneering, the receipts swelled and by the end of the year, the Academy nominations were in; four total: best director, best screenplay, best art direction, and best special effects design. (It also won the Hugo that year) I have to correct something in that regard. Kubrick won the Oscar for special effects design but the real genius was Doug Trumbull (who went on to work with Spielberg on Close Encounters and Ridley Scott on Blade Runner.) Trumbull invented the slit-scan technique for the Star Gate sequence as well as refining the front projection technique for the Dawn of Man sequence. He also designed all the computer interfaces for the data displays. (Ever notice that they look a lot like iPads? Also, Dan Richter- who played Moonwatcher, the australopithecine who first uses a bone club to kill his prey and beat One-Ear, the rival for the water hole- was given a choice between being listed as an actor or as a special effects designer. It was Richter who trained all the actors in how to act like primitive primates. He also had a lot to do with the design of the masks and costumes. He opted for co-star billing but the hellish process he put his fellow mimes through is the stuff of legend. Consider that raw meat they were gobbling. They didn't actually eat any, but all the blood and fat collected in the masks and by the end of the day, the stench was enough to gag a maggot. Read Benson's book for all the gory details. I hope you have a strong stomach. Ah, well. They say artists must suffer for their art. A nice sentiment, but not one I'd swear to myself. 2001 is most assuredly art, even High Art. They'll be watching it a thousand years from now.
